WAITING ON A CURRENT PHOTO

Location: San Diego, CA
Marital Status: In a stable, committed 18 year relationship (unfortunately, gay folks are not allowed to marry)
Children: Well, not really. I was married to Alexis Harwood for about 10 years, and she has a daughter, but it was really a marriage of convenience for both of us. I've never actually had sex with a woman, so children are pretty much out of the question.
Have you or would you let your kids see Rocky: If I did, sure. It isn't any worse than the six o'clock news.
What I'm doing these days: I retired from the Navy in 1995, and went into the computer field. I am a Local Area Network (LAN) Analyst for San Diego Data Processing Corp., a non-profit, independent City agency that provides IT/IS support to the City. I sang with the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego for three years, and was President for one year. I still love to sing (karaoke, mostly) but don't do it as much as I'd like. I do try to go to the piano bar at the Westgate on Wednesday's, when my friend Faith Page plays (she is really awesome). I edit the newsletter for the San Diego NetWare Users Association, and was President of that organization for a year. I also help friends with computer problems. I love to read, but don't seem to have much time to do it. I seem to spend way too much time watching TiVo. I usually hold a "Games Night" once a month for friends and colleagues.
People from Rocky I've kept in touch with: I send Christmas cards to Alexis (when I send any at all). I don't have anyone else's address. I see John Martin around every now and then, and I say 'Hi.'
Why I first went to Rocky: I first saw Rocky in Bremerton, WA while I was in the Navy.. I was really blown away by it, so I started going regularly to see it in Seattle, WA.
How I started performing: After going to see Rocky for a while, I made a few friends in Seattle, and we started going together. I started dressing up as one of the Transylvanians, then it sort of morphed into Riff-Raff. When I moved back to San Diego in 1982, I started going to the Guild. They needed a Riff-Raff at the time, so I started performing here. Then we moved to the Ken, and I performed for a couple of years, until I started having back problems, and got into my first relationship (big mistake!).
Food I ordered after the show: I don't know that I went out to eat much afterwards--I was not much of a Night Owl (and still am not!).
I last performed: in 1985
I last saw Rocky: Well, I watch Rocky on video every once in a while--the last time a month or two ago. At a theatre, about 1998 (or so) at the Guild. Like others, I was appalled that the cast actually solicited money as you left the Theater. It was sort of amazing to see how young they were--but I guess we were young back in "the old days", too. I didn't attend the reunion, but I would have, if I had known about it. I did see something in the paper, but I didn't know it was such a big deal at the time.
Did I buy the Rocky DVD? I have purchased Rocky on practically every medium on which it has been released: Audio CD (about 10 versions, including the 20th(?) year anniversary collection), cassette tape, 8-track tape (boy, that was a while ago!), the first VHS version, the 20th(?) year anniversary LaserDisc version, and the DVD version.
My favorite Rocky memories: Oh, there are lots. Going to Fresno with Debbie Golding to do the show there. Taking Mishell K. under our wings to help her do Magenta (the Kelly she refers to on this site is probably Kelly Gibbons--grandaughter of Ule Gibbons of GrapeNuts fame, who was doing Magenta at the time). Teaching Mishell to drive in my Chevy Cavalier. Great sadness when Kelly got married and dropped out of the scene (I still miss her!). Hanging out with Alexis, Kelly, Mishell, Sabrina Lawson/Franson, her fiancee/husband Rick, and all the other great people.
Partying at Marc Mead's place with Squidly Bob and their roommates (Allyson and RJ). The day we were at Marc's and there were all these fires going on in San Diego, and we saw the sunset reflecting off a window in the distance and called the fire department, thinking that it was another real fire, and just as we figured it out, the firemen showed up and we told them we didn't place the call! Going to the Dream Police parties and not indulging (I was in the Navy at the time--you know, drug tests and all that)--it was a little awkward for me, as I was not very good at interpersonal relationships then.
Building the lab wall at work and bringing it to the theater (it actually lit up--I was so proud of it!). Creating the gold lame space suit outfits with Kelly and Sabrina (I actually wore it to the Rocky Horror production at the Diversionary a few years ago--it seems to have shrunk a bit, though!!). Making Pina Colatas at the Ken. All the great times waiting in line to get in. John Martin dressed as Tootsie. The "fun" and the "fights" with Brian and Megan. Switch night (when we would all play members of the opposite sex). Working on and collecting costumes. As the song goes, "Those were the days, my friend..."
I really miss the old days, and I'm sorry that I did not keep in touch with my friends from back then. I was so sexually repressed and mentally messed up that it took a long time (and lots of counseling) to get over my social anxiety (not that I ever had anxiety about performing--just in personal relations) |
